CPR and First Aid Course
May 30th, 2011CPR and First Aid courses include 5 ½-hour Adult/Child CPR and AED courses and also a 4-hour First Aid course. For other schools, sessions offer a review of the materials prior to a written test and skills check. The CPR and First Aid session offers participants the chance to demonstrate their skills without attending a review or having a current certification. Participants are solely responsible for the exam preparation and will be expected to pass both a skills check and a written test. The primary purpose of this course is to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and treat adult, child, and infant breathing emergencies. Additionally, this course trains participants to identify and provide basic care for victims of sudden illness; such as diabetic emergencies, seizures, poisonings, strokes, and allergic reactions. This course also instructs how to identify and provide basic care for victims of injuries to muscles, bones and joints. Participants will learn how to control bleeding, minimize the effects of shock, and care for heat or cold related injuries.
The goal of the course is to teach CPR for adults, children, and infants that will help to sustain life until Emergency Medical Personnel arrive and take over. This course is not intended for professional paramedics, but for those interested in learning how they can help in an emergency situation. All the skills and information covered prepare students for passing the test. To be eligible to take this course, the student’s certification must be valid or have expired no longer than a year before the date of the course. Each participant will have the opportunity to view video segments, practice and perform skills for evaluation, and complete the written exams for the courses being reviewed, if applicable. In order to partake in a review course, the participant must have a current American Red Cross certificate (or the equivalent). Those without a certificate may not participate in the review course option.
